Overview of Clomifene Citrate Tablets:
OCYTON Tablet contain clomefene Citrate 50mg & 100mg.
Clomefene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). It is for ovulation induction to reverse anovulation or oligoovulation. Clomefene is there in WHO model list of essential medicines. It can lead to multiple ovulation, and hence increase the risk of conceiving twins. Clomifene is capable of interacting with estrogen-receptor-containing tissues. Clomiphene citrate stimulate FSH secretion, most probably by a competition with estradiol for the receptor sites in the hypothalamus or the pituitary. It has a prolonged effect, probably because of a tight binding to the receptor sites.
Clomefene citrate belong to the class of oraganic compounds known as stilbenes.
OCYTON Tablet can be used in the treatment of the following conditions:
- Ovulatory dysfunction in women desiring pregnancy.
- Treatment of male infetility.
Dose is usually started on day 3, 4, or 5 of the menstrual cycle at a dose of 50 mg OCYTON Tablet(one pill) once daily for five days. If ovulation does not appear to occur after the first course of therapy, a second course of 100 mg daily for 5 days should be given.
Clomifene inhibits estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus. Clomefene is given early in the menstrual cycle. It is typically prescribed beginning on day 3rd and continue for 5 days. In the presence of clomifene, the body perceives a low level of estrogen, similar to day 22 in the previous cycle.
By that time, FSH level is rising steadily, causing development of a few follicles. Follicles in turn produce the estrogen, which circulates in serum.
Increased FSH level causes growth of more ovarian follicles, and subsequently rupture of follicles resulting in ovulation. Ovulation occurs most often 6–7 days after a course of clomifene.
